Hi Fly to retire sole A380, citing Coronavirus pandemic

Malta-based ACMI operator Hi Fly announced today that their sole operating Airbus A380, 9H-MIP (c/n 006 built 2006) is to be retired by the end of December 2020.

In a press release the airline stated the decision to retire the aircraft came as a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic and a reduced demand for large aircraft. Coupled with the lease for the aircraft needing to be renewed at the end of the year, the choice was made to retire the aircraft from service.

The aircraft, formerly operated by Singapore Airlines as 9V-SKC, is painted in a “Save the Coral Reefs”, supporting the Mirpuri Foundation’s campaign, reinforcing the message of sustainability and protection of the seas.

The aircraft returned to Beja, Portual on 23 October after operating two flights between Malaysia and Thailand. It remains to be seen if it operates additional flights between now and the end of the year, but if it does we’ll update on Twitter at @PlanetAvgeek!
